Did you know that the largest indoor agricultural show in the nation takes place in the heart of Pennsylvania? It’s the rightfully named Pennsylvania Farm Show—an agricultural exposition held annually every January at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg.
The event, which is always free and open to the public, welcomes over half a million visitors, on average, every year. While Pennsylvania has a long-rooted history in agriculture, going back to the early days of colonization in the mid-1600s, it wasn’t until 1917 that the first official statewide farm show—the foundational incarnation of today’s expo—made its official debut. At the time, it was known as “the Pennsylvania Corn, Fruit, Vegetable, Dairy Products, and Wool Show” and was presented by a small group of men at Lancaster’s Leopard Hotel.
With the following years experiencing exponential growth in popularity, participation, and featured attractions, it was only a matter of time before construction on a much larger exposition space commenced. Today, you’ll find the current Farm Show Complex to be an innovative marvel with the potential to showcase a host of agrarian endeavors. It spans an impressive 24 acres all under one roof, encompassing 11 exhibition halls and three arenas.
That’s a tall order they deliver on, seeing how they feature more than 10,000 competitive events spread over 35 departments. In addition to showcasing exhibits that are all owned, grown, and fashioned by Pennsylvania residents, every year, the Farm Show presents various hands-on activities for attendees to learn firsthand about and even partake in.
From lace-making to wheat-weaving, blacksmithing, and more, there’s certainly no shortage of activities to pursue while attending one of these events. And you’ll have the opportunity to do so beginning today through January 11, as the 109th season gets underway. Public hours for the course of Farm Show’s run are as follows: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on January 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on January 5, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on January 11.
While each day presents its share of highlight events, talks, demos, and delights, some features will be ongoing throughout the entire duration, including many of the displays and expositions. Folks will also have the opportunity to enjoy rides on the portable merry-go-round manufactured by the Allan Herschell Company back in 1946 and taste some delicious food at the food court on each visit.
