This Saturday, July 13, the scene in Downtown Frederick, Maryland will play host to a most unique and unusual racing event. It’s the return of the always-anticipated annual National Clustered Spires High Wheel Race—the only race of its kind in the entire nation.
This isn’t your typical bicycle race, as riders will be mounting actual penny farthings, distinguishable by their large front wheels and smaller rear ones. Both authentically restored antique models and modern renditions in classic style will be ridden during the event.
The 0.4-mile loop race course will be right out front of Brewer’s Alley Restaurant & Bar, located at 124 N. Market Street. Riders will initially be divided into two groups of differing qualifying heats (Heat #1 and Heat #2), each spanning a 20-minute duration. The top 20 to 25 riders with the most laps completed during their qualifying heat will then compete in the final 30-minute championship race where the 2024 Clustered Spires High Wheel Race champion will be determined.
A Lawn Party held on the grounds at City Hall will kick things off at 11 a.m. Free and open to the public to come out and enjoy, the fun will last throughout the day, featuring an array of exciting endeavors for all ages. From food trucks to family-friendly activities, music, and more, the onsite happenings will continue throughout the event, concluding at 3:30 p.m.
The official start time for the races will be at noon, beginning with an official welcome and introduction. High Wheel Qualifying Heat #1 will then get underway at 12:15 p.m., followed by High Wheel Qualifying Heat #2 at 12:40 p.m.
At 1 p.m. there will be a series of Intermission events held on location. These include a Low Wheel Race, Slow Race, and “The Evolution of Bicycles” parade. Then at 2:30 p.m. comes the moment everyone waits for most—the High Wheel Race Championship. The Awards Ceremony will immediately follow this at 3:10 p.m.
