The Howard County Fair is ongoing now through August 15. A beloved weeklong annual summertime tradition in Maryland, this year’s offerings are extra special for two reasons. First, our nation is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. That alone greatly enhances the ambiance and appeal surrounding the overall event. Then there’s the fact that this year marks a major milestone. It is the fair’s 80th year as a mainstay event.
The first Howard County Fair, as we know it today, debuted back in 1946. Back then, it took the form of the Farm Bureau Picnic at Brendel’s Manor Park. We’ve certainly come a long way since those days. While offerings and runtime durations may have changed over time, the charming, old-fashioned, familiar essence has forever remained consistent and true.
At its helm, the Howard County Fair is a multifaceted undertaking for farm enthusiasts and family entertainment seekers alike. The commitment of those involved, as well as participating patrons and attending visitors alike, seems a little stronger here than at other county fairs.
There’s just so much to see, do, and explore at the fair! You have Ag shows, for instance. The timeless and foundational highlight of any good fair, Ag shows take on many forms, including crop presentations, animal agility competitions, best-in-show contests, and so much more.
Whether you are an active participant in such events or an awed spectator, the fair is sure to keep you thrilled. Then there is the vast array of vendors to explore. Each year, returning favorites and newbies alike make their appearances during the grand occasion, selling everything from food to handmade novelties, products, services, and more.
Some even lead performance demos on the spot, an added, alternative form of entertainment for some.
For ultimate entertainment stylings, though, keep in mind that the fair proudly presents ongoing stage performances throughout the day, every day. This includes live music by quality bands and performers, dance numbers, stage acts, and more. It’s also worth mentioning that some of the contests and races scheduled on various days are always a blast to watch (or participate in).
Some of the fair’s mainstay activities will be ongoing throughout the weeklong run. This, of course, includes opportunities for children to mingle with animals as well as anyone else of any age who has a particular interest.

The 2026 installment of the Howard County Fair runs August 8 through August 15. The fair will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Rides are open until 11 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online or at the gate upon arrival. People 13 and older pay $10. Ages 62 and over pay $5. Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge.
