Arrrgh to all you mateys who happen to be out and about Yorktown, Virginia, this weekend. For today marks the return of an annual endeavor known to shiver the timbers of all ages, scallywags, and genteel folk alike. It’s Pirates Invade Yorktown Weekend!
The event officially kicks off today as part of the ongoing themed Yorktown Market Days, which are held every weekend throughout the season. While most Market Day themes are one-day only events occurring on Saturday, the Pirates are taking over two days, Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 16.
Let the records show that this pirate invasion is like no other. It is a time-tested tradition and community fan-favorite that draws in scores of locals and visitors alike. In addition to the usual Market Day vendor run, you’re in for a bounty of buccaneer-themed delights. Gaze out in awe at the pirate encampment, or check out ongoing blacksmithing and cannon demos. From engaging storytelling sessions to active treasure hunts, live music and entertainment, and so much more, New Port’s Riverwalk Landing is surely the place to be this weekend.
The invasion will commence at 9 a.m. today (with some activities starting within the 8 a.m. hour) and will follow the usual scheduled market run through 3 p.m. Kids’ Crafting, Pirate Treasure Hunts, and demos will all start after 9 a.m. Cannon demos, balloon art, facepainting, and Custom Open House Tours begin at 10 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., there will be Pirate School & Training and Captain Slackbeard Storytime. The Smugglers Auction will be at 11 a.m.
Ongoing music will take place in tandem with the event. Performances will occur at Riverwalk Landing, York Hall, and Mobjack Bay (with some entertainment roving). Featured performers include The Clan MacCool Band, Blackbeard’s Head, Jolly Roving Tars, Bedlam Bones, Death By Bellows, Cindy Kays, Libre Dance USA.
The Yorktown Trolley will run between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., both days. All services are free of charge. Also, take note that while all events are slated to occur on Riverwalk Landing, rain or shine, in the event of significantly inclement weather, activities will be accommodated on the lower level of the Water Street Parking Terrace with the necessary overhead coverage provided.
