Anacostia Riverkeeper’s Annual MLK Day of Service
Taking place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on January 19, this annual MLK Day of Service event invites volunteers to join in the cleanup efforts at Pope Branch Park. Registration commences at 9:30 a.m., followed by a welcome and safety talk. Cleanup starts at 10:30 a.m.
Guests are encouraged to wear appropriate clothing for protection from the brush, including closed-toed shoes. All supplies will be provided. This event is in partnership with Pope Branch Park Restoration Alliance and funded by Washington Gas. Click on the link for all other information.
Chili Bowl Monday MLK Day of Service Feed & Clothe Our Homeless Neighbors
Happening January 19, between 10 a.m. and noon in Baltimore, Maryland, is the annual renowned “Chili Bowl” feeding event is made possible by the Inge Benevolent Ministry. The setup will be at the Fallsway Avenue Bridge Underpass, a convenient location, seeing how homeless individuals throughout the community generally do not hail from one specific area.
Volunteering for this event largely consists of serving hot bowls of chili to unhoused attendees and also passing out cold-weather clothing items and essential toiletries. Visit the event link to learn more.
Community Ecology Institute’s MLK Day of Service
Consider joining in for one of two volunteer opportunities with the Community Ecology Institute. The first is Freetown Farm-Greenhouse (Columbia, Maryland) clean up and prep, which will be on January 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Here, participants take part by rolling up their sleeves to help clean and organize Freetown Farm’s greenhouse, clearing out old plant material, refreshing work areas, and preparing trays and supplies for the exciting seed-starting season ahead.
The latter event occurs on January 19. Here, volunteers dive into hands-on work at Green Farmacy Garden (Fulton, Maryland), tackling invasive shrubs to protect native medicinal plants, restore ecological balance, and strengthen the health of this one-of-a-kind botanical sanctuary.

Give Warmth DC: 4th Annual MLK Day of Service
This year’s annual installment of Give Warmth DC will take place on January 17, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on location at Vera Cocina & بار in the District of Columbia. The event is a combined community initiative between volunteers, community partners, and supporters during one of the coldest times of the year.

MLK Day of Service: Community Cleanup
Made possible by the National Society of Black Engineers and the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is this joint community beautification event, taking place on January 17, from 10 a.m. to noon. From weeding to trash cleanup, and everything in between, it’s all about sprucing up the community.

MLK Day of Service: Invasive Vegetation Removal Near National Landing
Join the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail for this engaging volunteer event that entails hands-on removal of invasive plants from the trail near National Landing in Arlington, Virginia. Proceedings commence on January 19 at 10 a.m. and will run through noon.

The mission is to support and provide for cell warriors and their families at UM Capital Region Medical Center Sickle Cell Clinic in Largo, Maryland, undergoing infusion treatments via comfort and distraction items (thoughtful supplies that help ease long treatment days and bring moments of relief, encouragement, and care to patients and their loved ones). Thursday Network’s 26th Annual MLK Day of Service: Blanket & Toiletry Drive
Now in its 26th year is this annual blanket and toiletry drive, made possible by Thursday Network in partnership with collaboration with Maya Angelou Public Charter School. For this volunteer event, which will take place on January 19 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., participants are called to assemble and deliver care packages laden with all the essentials, blankets, deodorants, and all sorts of toiletries. The 2026 goal is to deliver 2,500 packages to people in need throughout the Greater Washington Area.
