As we get into the swing of summer and start making vacation plans, two regional retreat favorites spring effortlessly to the minds of most Marylanders. There is, of course, that beachy keen classic notion of heading to Ocean City on the East Coast. But there is another time-tested favorite located out West in Garrett County. That destination is Deep Creek Lake. Encompassing a total area of 3,900 acres and spanning a shoreline of nearly 70 miles, Deep Creek Lake truly is a vast and versatile marvel to behold. But what is the history behind this massive lake’s formation and its longevity as a time-tested recreational resort favorite to so many? For this Flashback Friday Feature, I’m deep diving into the history of Deep Creek Lake and its surrounding region.
A Bit About the Regional History
Some folks are surprised to learn that Deep Creek Lake was artificially created. In truth, Maryland has no natural lakes. All those resident lakes of such great renown throughout the state were all purposely established—the cultivated, leftover results of a regional project, such as river damming. Deep Creek Lake’s creation came about from a hydroelectric plant built on location only a century ago. That’s right, in addition to having been manmade, Deep Creek Lake is relatively younger than you’d expect. Garrett County just celebrated the lake’s centennial!
While the Lake may be younger, the lay of the land certainly isn’t. Records show that settlers had already arrived and were living in the area that now comprises the surrounding Deep Creek Lake region as early as the 1700s. Furthermore, the name “Deep Creek” may have been around for possibly just as long, although the first confirmed written record dates back to the early 1800s.
All the same, the original “Deep Creek” terminology was used to refer to a tributary of the Youghiogheny River, which flowed through these parts known as “The Glades.” The Glades were a mountainous vacation hotspot for folks back in the 1800s, so it’s safe to say that the region’s status as a well-loved escape destination was already intact early, even predating the recreational lake that would one day put it on the map.
The Lake’s Creation
Historical accounts denote that at least two dams were constructed on what now constitutes Deep Creek, both well before the 1920s. But it was that forever-altering major project by the Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company to build a powerplant that led to the formation of a massive body of water.
Deep Creek Lake was formed when the Pennsylvania Electric Company was tasked with creating a rock wall dam across the “Deep Creek” tributary of the Youghiogheny River. Work on the dam began in 1923 and was completed two years later in 1925. The hydroelectric plant started operating publicly on May 26, 1925.
Lakeside Attractions and Amenities
Within the century that it was established, Deep Creek Lake and its surrounding land have proven both lucrative and advantageous as a resort destination. With the provision of numerous onsite attractions and amenities available throughout the year, Deep Creek Lake has emerged as one of the state’s top tourist hotspots.
Lakeside activities include boating (kayaking/canoeing/motorboating, etc.), swimming, fishing, water skiing, and other riparian recreational pursuits. Hiking is another popular pastime, as is mountain biking. The area is home to over 20 miles of diverse trails used for those pursuits and several others.
Just as the opportunities appear endless, you also have the 6,000-square-foot Discovery Center onsite. It’s here that visitors can learn all about the local plants and wildlife around these parts, with special focus on the American Black Bears known to inhabit the countryside. Other exhibit highlights include conservation issues and practices, and hosted hands-on activities involving local coal mining and logging. A vast range of educational programs by naturalists, volunteers, and rangers is ongoing at any given time.
You’ll find plentiful lodging options in the direct vicinity, ranging from hotels, resorts, Airbnbs, and other home-away-from-home rentals. The immediate lakeside is the site of 112 resident campsites, 26 of which come equipped with electricity.
On another unique note, Deep Creek is a verifiable good neighbor to Maryland’s notable Wisp Resort. While more popular as a wintertime wonder for skiing and snowboarding interests, the resort is a year-round marvel to flock to, just the same. Golfing is their greatest claim to fame during the warmer months.
The Deep Creek Lake Area was officially designated as a state park in 1959. Spanning 1,800 acres, the park adjoins Deep Creek Lake Natural Resources Management Area and the Lake. The State of Maryland has been in charge of all lakeside activities and recreational offerings since 1980. However, the Pennsylvania Electric Company retained official ownership up through 2000 when Maryland purchased the lake from them directly. The underlying lake and its buffer zone properties cost a total of $17 million.
Deep Creek Today
Deep Creek Lake State Park, its namesake lake, and all those offered opportunities onsite here continue to thrive in statewide popularity. While delightful Deep Creek experiences can be had year-round, do take note of some upcoming special event happenings in light of the 100th Anniversary Celebration. On June 21, 2025, for instance, visitors can enjoy free admission to the park. Park site happenings on that day will also include a Recreation Fair and a Boat Parade on Deep Creek Lake.
