Looking for something fun, family-oriented, and both historically and culturally enriching to do this weekend? Here’s an excellent suggestion, especially if you happen to be in the greater Deep Creek, Maryland region on the dates of May 17 and May 18; how about hightailing it over to the 2025 installment of the Garrett County Heritage Festival?
As the ultimate celebration of the heritage of the McHenry Community Park, which has been serving the area since 1981, attendees to this year’s festival are in for two sensational days of ongoing delights. You have a host of exceptional events, highly anticipated activities, and all-around nostalgic niceties to boot. It’s an event draped in transcending appreciation and respect for the community’s heritage and a deliverance of good old-fashioned fun and follies.
Kicking off the good times on Saturday morning will be the long-awaited Fun Run & Walk from 10 a.m. to noon. This event will be held along the park’s Meshach Browning Trail System. All entrants will receive a goodie bag of fun free stuff.

The resident pump track opening for the day and all featured bicycling skills events in conjunction with it will also begin at 10 a.m. These will continue through 2 p.m. Take note that all biking events are free to participate in.
Exhibitors and vendors will set up shop on the scene beginning around 11 a.m. The versatile range of offerings is so bountiful that you can expect to find universally appealing interests for everyone in your party, guaranteed. Vendors and exhibitors will remain set up throughout the day before wrapping things up at 5 p.m.
One of the day’s most amusing undertakings, however, is the Browning Family Pioneer Challenge. Occurring between noon and 5 p.m., the Meshach Browning Pioneer Challenge was established as a fun, engaging way to raise greater awareness for Garrett County’s rich history and heritage. It centers around Meshach Browning, one of the first settlers in the area, and the essential survival skills for manning this wilderness as it was back in the 1800s.
The challenge welcomes teams comprising anywhere between two and five people, ready and willing to compete in a variety of challenges to test pioneer-era endurance, stamina, and survival skills. The latter includes everything from fire-starting, water-carrying, ax-throwing, and even log-sawing! Individual scores are recorded at each rotating demo, later tallied up at the end to determine the winner. There is no fee or preregistration requirement for participating. Two exciting Disc Golf Tournaments will be taking place on Saturday as well. The first is the Second Annual Disc Golf Tournament from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The other is the nighttime novelty Glo Disc Tournament, between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Both require preregistration.
Happy happenings on Sunday, May 18, will get started at 11 a.m. Again, vendors and exhibitors will be displaying their goods starting then and lasting through 5 p.m. This is also the hour when the contested Cornhole Tournament will begin, running through 4 p.m. Adventure Rides along the park trails will begin at noon and run through 3 p.m.
Both festival days will feature a range of ongoing demos, entertainment, delicious food, and all-around good times to go around. You won’t want to miss any of the happy happenings!
