Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s coming by waterski. At least, that is the case in Old Town, Virginia, just as it’s been for almost four decades now.
Taking place tomorrow on Christmas Eve is the 39th Annual Waterskiing Santa Show. As the story goes, this much-beloved novelty tradition first got started back in 1986. That was when a group of friends gathered together and drew straws to decide which one of them would sail out on the Potomac in a Santa suit. That honor went to the one who drew the shortest straw—the official “loser” who won the title as the first waterskiing Santa!
The tradition continued the following year. Local news even covered the story, and things have only gotten bigger and better every year since. Other characters have since joined the lineup and plotted happenings as well.
The event has grown so much as a beloved Christmas Eve tradition that it even now garners official sponsorship. This year’s sponsors, for example, include the City of Alexandria, Operation First Response, and Old Dominion Boat Club, among several others.
Furthermore, all planning and preparation for the grand event now begins as early as the summer before. That’s when water-skier sign-ups and volunteer sign-ups for other costume characters become available. Other roles to fill include boat drivers, radio communications management, and those of others working both on and behind the scenes.
The 2024 installment of the Waterskiing Santa Show will commence tomorrow at 1 p.m. onsite at the Old Town Waterfront in Alexandria. The best spectator viewing spots can be found around Founders Park, Point Lumley Park, Waterfront Park, and several other surrounding locations near King Street. The event will also be live-streamed on their Facebook link.
While showtime is officially at 1 p.m. sharp, do try to arrive 15 or so minutes early. There is a rumor circulating that the one and only Grinch of holiday infamy will try to steal the show from Santa at 12:45 p.m., just before the event kicks off.
Santa, Mrs. Claus, and other crew members will begin their annual sail at BARCA Pier, heading north to Founders Park before circling back south and venturing toward Ford’s Landing. When all is over, Santa will be out and about for photos with children and other interested parties. It’s all set to be a blast. So come on out and see for yourself!
